L-702 (Alibates Chert)
Alibates is also known as Agatized Dolomite, Alibates Dolomite, Alibates Silicified Dolomite, Amarillo Flint, Beef Steak, or Quartermaster. It is a silicified dolomite, chert or porcellanite. It is red, blue, white, maroon, yellow, purple, brown, violet, cream with "beef-steak" is the most popular with modern flintknappers. Some colors are effected more than others when heat-treated. When weathered there are various shades of brown, dark red, and maroon. It has crystal vug inclusions. Coarse to very smooth texture. Deposits include horizontally bedded silicified dolomite, large voids in matrix filled, also residual, eroded nodules and chunks.

Location remarks: Alibates National Monument, Texas; Texas panhandle and eastern New Mexico
Archaeology remarks: Alibates used throughout all cultural periods: Earth moving activities associated with chert procurement.
