L-577 (Mines Chert)
Mines Chert, also known as Bedford County, is an oolitic chert. It is light gray to medium gray with clear and black oolites with black being the most prominent. It becomes white with occasional iron staining and a coriaceous cortex when weathered. The chert has many ooid inclusions. The texture is very coarse, with angular fracturing, outer surface iron stains and roughness caused by dolomitic cortex. Deposits include platy and residuum.
Location remarks: Residuum chert on the hillside location of the Deer Pens experimental station on the Penn State U. Campus, College Township, Centre Co., PA; Discontinuous bands running southwest-northeast in the south-central Pennsylvania from near Charlesville to State College to Abdera.
