L-385 (Oriskany Quartzite)
Oriskany Chert, also known as Ridgeley, is a black sandy flint or silicified sandstone. It becomes gray when weathered. It has inclusions of irregular and rarely rounded grains of clastic quartz and minor amounts of pyrite, magnetite, zircon, and hornblende. It is a coarse granular material with vitreous or glassy spots. Deposits include nodules ranging from one quarter to eight inches in diameter at the top of the formation or as black nodules.
Location remarks: Exposures at Phelps, Ontario County, New York and Kimber Springs near Syracuse, New Yrok; outcrops 0.5 miles south of Marshalls Creek, Smithfield Township, east side of Rt. 209, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.
Archaeology remarks: Prehistoric quarry/workshop 0.5 miles south of Marshalls Creek, Monroe Co., PA - no diagnostic artifacts; Conrail and Deer Park, PA sites.
