L-1439 (Argentine Chert): Direct collection from outcrop. Provenience includes float/residuum. Not a collection from archaeological context. Known collection procedure. Collection includes raw material, outer surface, heat-treated specimens, and naturally-weathered specimens.
L-1439 (Argentine Chert): Winterset chert in the roadcut & also down over the bank by the "T" intersection. This chert, however, is the black variety with white calcite stringers. More preualent than a light type, see L-1441.
Argentine Chert is a tan, pale brown, light gray, dark reddish gray, or light gray mottled chert. It can also be very dark gray to nearly black containing scattered cream-colored fossil-bits. When weathered it becomes light brown. It may contain fusilinid fossils. It has a slightly gritty, opaque texture. Deposits include nodules in limestone.
