L-1744 (Saugus Jasper Rhyolite)
Saugus Jasper, also known as Saugus or Saugus Rhyolite, is a red, maroon to light pink or reddish pink Rhyolite. It has a red matrix often banded or mottled yellow or tan when weathered. It has a fine grained, glassy and aphanitic texture.
Geology remarks: Group- Lynn Volcanics Complex
Location remarks: Outcrops on the south sude of the Saugus River, a short distance to the northeast of the railroad station at Saugus Center, Essex Co., Ma; Along the banks of the Saugus River slightly north of the mouth of the Mystic River according to James Bradley, et al.
Archaeology remarks: Fluted point of Saugus rhyolite from the outlet of Ossipee Lake, NH.
