Description:
Henry Howard Cary (1908-1991) was a graduate of the California Institute of Technology who joined the National Technical Laboratories (later Beckman Instruments) in 1935, and made important contributions to the design of the D.U. spectrophotometer. In 1946, he and two colleagues established the Applied Physics Corporation, a firm that specialized in the design and manufacture of Cary spectrophotometers. Varian Associates bought Applied Physics in 1966, and renamed it Cary Instruments.
The Cary 11, made by the Applied Physics Corporation, was the first commercial recording UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The first example was delivered to the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh in April 1947. This example was used at the National Institutes of Health.
