Immersion heater with a “FENWAL INC. / ASHLAND, MASS.” inscription.
Thomas Legar Fen (1890-1985) was a Boston businessman. Carl Waldemar Walter (1905-1992) was an innovative surgeon affiliated with the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and the Harvard Medical School. Working together, the two men established Fenwal in 1935. The firm, which began in Newton, Mass., and relocated to Ashland, Mass., in 1938, manufactured smoke and fire detection devices, thermostatic controls, devices to control environmental sepsis, and much more. By 1962 it had become a division of Baxter Laboratories. Inc.
