Description:
The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization for men who served in the Union Army, Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War. This bronze medal was worn by Lt. Col. William Irvin Wolfley (1837-1910), a physician who served as Surgeon in Chief of the 62nd Ohio Infantry. It is a 5-pointed star with “GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC / 1861 / VETERAN / 1866” and family in the middle. The bar at top has an eagle and crossed cannon; the back of this bar has “PAT. MAY 4, 1886 / JUNE 22, 1886.” Between the eagle and the star is a small American flag.
