Perforated aluminum splint with paper label that reads “LEVIS’S METALLIC SPLINT / No. 3 / HUMERUS. / FOR ADULTS.” An inscription on the inside of the splint reads “LEE’S PATENT / July 5, 1887 / OCT. 30TH, 1888.” Levis’s splints were designed by (or perhaps to the specifications of) Richard Joseph Levis (1827-1890), a graduate of Jefferson Medical College who practiced medicine and surgery in Philadelphia. The referenced patents were issued to John Elwood Lee (1860-1914), a manufacturer in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
