Description:
William Feinbloom (1904-1985), a New York optometrist, developed the first American-made contact lenses in 1936. These were composed primarily of resin and fitted to the user’s eyeballs. Bausch & Lomb began making contact lenses of this sort soon thereafter, and gave this set of nine corneal lenses to the Smithsonian in 1943. Inscriptions on the lid of the case read “BAUSCH / & LOMB / U.S.A.” and “CONTACT LENS / TRIAL SET.”
