Psychological Test
Description:
As an undergraduate at Vassar College, Luella W. Cole (1893-1970) studied psychology. Sidney L. Pressey (1888-1979) got his undergraduate degree at Williams College and then was admitted to Harvard for graduate work. In 1916 and 1917 they met pursuing practical training as interns at Boston Psychopathic Hospital (Cole would be hired as a case worker there). The two married in 1918 and went to Indiana University where Sidney Pressey joined the faculty and Luella Cole Pressey was a graduate student – she completed her PhD. They would both continue their careers at Ohio State University. Luella C. Pressey’s coauthor on this test was Viola Grant. The test was published after Pressey had moved to Ohio State.
According to a contemporary Indiana description, “this test has two parts. In the first, there are twenty-five lists, each of five words. The examiner names one of the words in each list and asks the child to draw a circle around the word given. In the second part, there are fifteen lines, each with one short sentence in it. The examiner reads one of the sentences and asks the student to draw a circle around the sentence read.”
Note that in some publications, Luella W. Cole Pressey is listed as L.W. Cole, in some L.W. Pressey and in some L.C. Pressey. She is listed in the worldcat database as Luella Cole.
