Description:
Arthur I. Gates (1890-1972) obtained his Bachelor of Law (1914) and his M.A. (1915) from the University of California at Berkeley and his PhD. from Columbia University (1917). He spent the rest of his career on the faculty of Teachers College at Columbia, putting special emphasis on the study of reading and language arts. Teachers College published his tests. Gates not only was the author of reading tests at several levels but of textbooks and basal readers.
This is the record sheet designed by Gates for “reading diagnosis”. It has space for recording considerable information about the student, including age and grade. It also has room for records of intelligence test results, scores on the three different parts of the Gates Primary Reading Test, scores on different aspects the Gates 3-8 Silent Reading Test, scores on other silent reading tests, scores on oral reading tests (both one by Gray and several aspects of one by Gates), score on the Gates word pronunciation test, and scores on tests by Gates on perceptual orientation. The sheet was copyrighted in 1933 and filled out in 1938.
