Zacharia "Zack" Wheat (1888-1972) played outfield for the Brooklyn Superbas/ Robins (the team that would later officially change their name to the Dodgers) from 1909-1926. In 1927 he would finish his career playing for the Philadelphia Athletics.
Wheat remains the Dodgers’ all-time franchise leader in hits, runs batted in, and total bases, as well as in doubles and triples. His career numbers include a batting average of .317, with 2,884 hits, 132 home runs, and 1,248 runs batted in. Brooklyn would take home two National League pennants during Wheat’s tenure (1916,1920.)
Descended from puritan Moses Wheat on his father’s side, and of Cherokee ancestry from his Mother’s, Wheat’s two brothers also played professional baseball, with Mack also making the Major Leagues, playing alongside Zach for five years in Brooklyn.
