Humphrey at the 1968 Democratic National Convention by carrying this handbag, made from a painted metal lunch pail, and wearing a matching dress and scarf. Humphrey won a hard-fought convention battle to become his party’s presidential nominee but lost the election by less than one percent of the vote to his Republican opponent, former vice president Richard Nixon.
