Description:
The object is a political cartoon hand-drawn in ink and watercolor on white paper by Clifford Berryman in Washington, D.C. possibly circa April or May 1906. It depicts a teddy bear wearing a white pinafore with a cross on the upper portion, and carrying a flag with the cross painted in red watercolor. Hand-drawn and hand-colored by Clifford Berryman and signed "Berryman" in the lower right area of the illustration.
Berryman often used the teddy bear to show sympathy or understanding with Theodore Roosevelt. On April 18, 1906, President Roosevelt called upon the American Red Cross to lead a relief effort to aid San Francisco following the earthquake and resulting fire which remain to this day one of the worst natural disasters with loss of life in the nation.
