Description:
Unequal-arm counter balance with an iron base painted red with a gold design, and the words “HOWE / TRADE MARK” and “10 lbs.” The words “HOWE SCALE / CO. / RUTLAND VT.” and the number “1066” appear in raised characters on the top, under the circular black plate. The beam is brass.
The Howe Scale Company began in business in 1847; moved from Brandon to Rutland, Vt., in 1873; won medals at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, and the Paris Exposition of 1878; and introduced balances of this sort around 1880.
