Description:
Patent model for John DeWitt Wemple, “Crutch,” U.S. Patent 39,854 (Sept. 8, 1863). Wemple’s crutches were extensible and so were variable in height; they had springs and so were easy on the arms; they could be folded and so were easily portable; and they would not slip.
