Description:
An Elementary Treatise on Physical Geography is part of the Warren's geography series. It is designed for "advanced classes in Academies, Seminaries, Normal and High Schools." This revised 1873 edition reflects advances in science at the time encompassing meteorology and botany, as well as philology. “Philology” was the traditional study of the history of language, including the historical study of literary texts. It has been largely supplanted by modern linguistics.
This volume is not organized by country or continent, rather it's divided into four main parts: The Land, The Water, The Atmosphere, and Organic Life. It contains numerous engravings and is illustrated by twenty copper-plate and electrotyped maps and charts. The green front cover depicts a global odyssey through intertwined illustrations of African wildlife, sea journeys, volcanoes, arctic and temperate zone landscapes. The back cover contains ads for books from educational publishers. It is 116 pages in length.
The original author David M. Warren (1820-1861) was an American inter-disciplinary scholar who also wrote: The Common School Geography - An Elementary Treatise on Mathematical, Physical and Political Geography; A Primary Geography and An Intermediate Geography. His texts were a mainstay for the public schools as evidenced by the fact that 36 editions of The Common School Geography were published between 1857 and 1877.
This textbook was revised by the multi-talented Adolph von Steinwehr (1822-1877). He was a Prussian army officer who emigrated to the United States and served as a Union general in the American Civil War. Following his military service, von Steinwehr became one of the foremost American cartographers of his time, publishing scores of geography texts, maps, and atlases; many of which are still available in print.
Cowperthwait & Co. was an American publishing company based in Philadelphia. They facilitated the expansion American atlas and map publishing in the early to mid-19th Century. Originally a school publisher, they expanded to sell many geographic materials.
