Description:
General Information: Commemorative coin made by the US Mint for Breast Cancer Awareness. Coin is gold with a pink hue. This is the first gold coin with a pink hue that the U.S. Mint has issued.
This commemorative coin was minted by the United States Mint for a fundraising program for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The special program was created by the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Act passed by the United States Congress and signed into law in 2016. Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), a longtime advocate of funding for research on breast cancer, introduced the legislation in the House of Representatives, while Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) introduced the bill in the Senate.
The coin was designed by artist Emily Damstra and features a relieved-looking older women, a younger woman with a raised fist signifying her will to fight, and a butterfly as a symbol of hope. The Mint used a specially-formulated pink gold for the $5 coin in recognition of the importance of the color pink in the breast cancer cause. Coins went on sale in March 2018 and were sold at a surcharge to support BCRF. The program also included the minting and sale of silver coins (in $1 and half-dollar denominations) featuring the same design as the pink gold coin.
