These six engravings were produced for the Optics article in volume 17 of the <i>Encyclopaedia Londinensis</i>, a multi-volume work published at London between 1810 and 1829.
In the center of one is an eye surrounded by seven women probably representing the colors of the rainbow. In each corner is a putti holding, respectively, a spyglass, a camera obscura, a prism, and a bowl of water refracting light. The text reads “Optics” and “Engraved for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Jany 1820” and “A.D.M. Inventit” and “J. Chapman, sculp.”
In another, the texts read “OPTICS” and “Plate 12” and “Engraved for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Jany 1820” and “1, 2, 3. Reflecting Microscope. 4 to 8, Solar Microscopes. 9, 10. Lucernal Microscope.”
