Description (Brief):
This surgical instrument is marked <i>Tiencken</i> which refers to Julius Tiencken a New York City surgical instrument maker who was active from 1863 to 1872. The case is made of Rosewood with brass trim. It has three molded instrument compartments lined in red velvet. The set includes four saws, including a Capital saw, Metacarpal, Hey's and chain saw, an amputation scalpel, a scalpel and raspatory, bone forceps, trephine with out a handle, trocar with cannula, a raspatory and chisel, an artery forceps. Two Liston and one Catlin amputation knives. Six small knives, two needles with handles and a hook. Two graduated sounds and a probe, three uterine curettes, and a trephination brush.
The Surgical set belonged to the donor's grandfather Horace Perkins MacKechnie, M.D. (1841-1919).
