Compound monocular microscope with coarse and fine focus, inclination joint, circular stage, circular base with three ball feet, and an “E. H. GRIFFITH, FAIRPORT N.Y. / PAT. DEC. 14, 86 / 866” inscription on the stand. Ezra Hollace Griffith (1838-1894), a travelling salesman and enthusiastic microscopist, described this form, termed the Griffith Club Microscope, as a “full-sized, first-class” instrument that was “free from tremor, unique in design, and beautiful in appearance.” Bausch & Lomb made the objective for this example, and may also have made the stand as well.
