Poster of Ruth St. Denis in Tagore Poem Sari circa 1915. Ruth St. Denis belongs to the pioneering group of American modern dancers which include Loie Fuller and Isodora Duncan. These dancers are considered the forerunners of today’s modern dance choreographers. St. Denis began her career in the theater and went on to achieve spectacular success in Europe and throughout the United States. Her flowing body movements, skillful costuming, and exotic appearance brought attention to her interpretive dancing. She was heavily influenced by Near and Far Eastern themes in her dances.
