<p><i>The Chicago Defender</i> is an African American newspaper based in Chicago, Illinois. The newspaper was founded by Robert S. Abbott in 1905 and reported on Civil Rights issues such as Jim Crow-era violence, racial segregation, and other social issues of the day. <i>The Chicago Defender</i> featured writings of Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ida B. Wells, and other African American luminaries. The newspaper began an online publication in 2019.</p>
