Moral described the pattern she pyroengraved onto the exterior of the gourd as "python," evidently a popular pattern with variations given other examples in this collection. Typical for the style region, the entire exterior surface has been integrated into the design.
A woman would own a series of gourds from small cups to large storage bowls to be used for everything from feeding a baby, serving stew, water or porridge, or holding items at the market.
Description:
Hemispherical gourd pyroengraved on the exterior with two rectangles in circles. Rectangles and circle bands are solid black edged in natural surface, with the background crosshatched.

Ellen Patterson Brown, Chevy Chase, Maryland, collected in Chad, 1971-1973 to 1994
