In Central Africa, copper alloy is cast in open molds using the so-called "puddle-casting" technique. This wooden object is a mold form for an anklet. It was pressed into the sand or earth to create a shaped hole into which metal was poured. The resulting metal slab could then be bent around to form an anklet that was smooth and ridged on the outside. The inside would not be sharp but would have a pitted and textured "puddled" surface. An example of this type of anklet can be found in the museum's collection (84-4-4).
Description:
Wood rectangular anklet mold form with flat back and convex front with damaged raised ridges. Overall dark brown color.

Dr. Donald P. Conwell, Washington, D.C., -- to 1970
