Eshu Elegba is the Yoruba messenger god, conveyor of sacrifices, revealer of hidden truths and an agent of change. This small stylized figure was attached to a devotee's wrist when they danced and asked for money in the name of Eshu. The cowrie shells and coins suggest this practice but more symbolically refer to Eshu's connection with the market, as a place where change and conflict are likely. The use of indigo pigment also refers to wealth. While the contrast of dark and light suggest Eshu's nature.
Description:
Small wood block figure with incised decoration surmounted by a head with a long tailed hair style, hite metal eyes and an overall dark patina, possibly indigo dye. Strands of cowrie shells are strung on leather from the neck and one coin hangs on a leather thong from the neck.
