While this could be a container for some household condiment, related examples in other collections are identified as medicine containers. The detail of the shape of the opening and the fastening mechanism demonstrate the makers care; the extent of the encrusted patina suggests it was well used.
Description:
Bottle neck gourd with a curving neck and a door cut into the side. The door is square with two points on top, and secured with curving piece of cane through three plant fiber loops. The container has an overall lightly encrusted surface.
