Sheila Pree Bright’s images often feature women and celebrate the central role that women historically have played in organizing protests and leading demands for social change. At a Breonna Taylor protest, Bright recalls, “I felt the trauma within the women's voices when they spoke; it was very emotional, fierce, and sobering.”
Description:
A digital, black-and-white image of two unidentified protesters at a Black Lives Matter rally on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Atlanta, Georgia. The two women stand at the left and center, with their proper left fists raised in Black Power stances. They are depicted in three-quarters profile with their faces turned towards the left edge of the image. The woman at the center is wearing a light tone, V-neck, long sleeve shirt and has a dark purse strap slung over her proper left shoulder. The woman on the far left is wearing a three-quarter sleeve, dark tone shirt with rose pattern on the front, a fedora, and dark sunglasses. Standing in the right foreground is a man holding the left edge of a dark tone banner. He is facing the viewer with a serious expression on his face. Behind them is a group of protesters, some holding signs. A couple of the signs visible in the background include: [BLACK TRANS / LIVES / MATTER] and [CAPITALISM / HAS OUTLIVED / [ITS?] USEFULNESS / - MLK] printed in white text below a stylized graphic of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In the background are additional protesters and trees.
