Description:
This is the 22nd issue of BLK Magazine published September 1990. The front cover features a black and white photograph of Audre Lorde from the chest up, with lighting on her left side, creating a shadow over her right side. In the upper left corner, [BLK] is printed in bold, white, uppercase letters within a red rectangular box. The L and K are partially obscured by the photograph of Lorde. Above the text box in white, uppercase, smaller letters reads [THE NATIONAL BLACK LESBIAN AND GAY NEWS MAGAZINE] fitting perfectly across the length of the textbox. Below the textbox and margined to the left is white text that reads [Vol. 2 No. 9 / Whole No. 22 / September 1990]. The headline in white text reads [Audre Lorde] with red text reading [ON EVERYTHING / FROM BLACK GERMANS / TO 2 LIVE CREW]. At the bottom and aligned to the left is red text announcing the contents of the issue: [NEWS / CARTOONS / WORD UP / READ MY LIPS / CLASSIFIEDS]. There are 56 numbered pages, with articles, advertisements, classifieds, black and white photographs, and cartoon illustrations throughout.
The inside of the cover features an ad for the Minority AIDS project for a free, anonymous, AIDS antibody test [WHAT’S WORSE… / 20 MINUTES OF FEAR AND WORRYING OR… / A LIFETIME OF FEAR AND WORRYING? CONSIDER GETTING THE AIDS ANTIBODY TESTED TODAY.]. The content opens with the section titled [Word Up / News of the Outrageous, the Amusing, the Pathetic and the Unexpected] by Leon Miller with four short articles: [Running Back to Macy’s] about Roger Craig modeling for Calvin Klein, [Tiny Tina Grows Big] about drag queen Tiny Tina acknowledging her offensive behavior, [Rescuing the White Race] running for the Democratic Primary for lieutenant governor, J. B. Stoner says AIDS is a disease meant to wipe out the Jewish, Black, and LGBT+ community, and [Etiology 101] about 2 Live Crew and Public Enemy’s homophobic lyrics. The section ends with [Tell the Tale] which encourages readers to submit a funny, strange, or odd story to the publication, reminding them it should be both Black and gay or lesbian related.
This is followed by [JUMP START], with founder and editor Alan Bell comparing the Kuwaiti outrage with the Jesse Helms issue. On the same page and to the left is a column for the BLK mast head and below is the [CONTENTS] listing the one cover story and seven departments, or sections. On the following page are three letters to the editor in the section [BLK MAIL].
The cover story, which begins on page 7, is titled [Audre Lorde / The celebrated author on everything from Black Germans to 2 Live Crew] with the label headline [THE BLK INTERVIEW]. One quote from the article is printed in a larger font: [“I think all art by its nature must be revolutionary. In times that are sick and as critical as the time that we live in, how can any art not be revolutionary? If it is not, then it is something other than art.”]. There are two photographs of Audre Lorde, with one of them featuring Afro-German Sarah Schneir.
