Description:
This is the 11th issue of BLK magazine published October 1989. On the front cover, there is an image of George Augustus Stallings Jr. Stallings Jr. wears a white clerical robe and dark stole. At top left, [BLK] is printed in large, bold, white uppercase letters within a red rectangular textbox with [Number 11, Octobe-] along the bottom, with the month partially obscured by the image of Stallings Jr. There are 34 numbered pages, with articles, advertisements, classifieds, black and white photographs, and cartoon illustrations throughout.
On inside cover under headline [MAN / HUNT / Wanted: / Mean of Color / to Join Us] is a list community-building and educational events organized by the Minority AIDS Project in October.
Under the heading [Word Up] there are four short notices: [Dynamics of the Situation / An Axl to Grind / Mystery List / Dedicated to the Ones We Love] and the fifth, [Tell the Tale], invites readers to submit news items notable for be funny, strange, outrageous, or homophobic. This is followed by letters to the editor [BLK MAIL], the BLK masthead, and the calendar section [BLK BOARD].
The cover story, which begins on page 11 and ends on page 15, is entitled [Black and (Not) Gay / D.C. Priest breaks from Catholic Church / to start own black congregation]. Two quotes and text from the interview are printed in a larger font. The first reads [“I believe this is an effort to divert attention from my mission and message to make the African-American experience valid and whole, and to drive racial insensitivity and racism out of the Catholic Church.”], the second [“I’ll tell you about my sexuality when you discover how many homosexuals are working right there in the pastoral center of the Washington Archdiocese.”], and the third [He turned St. Teresa’s from a dying church to a vibrant congregation of 2,000 before leaving in 1988 after 12 years to become archdiocesan evangelism director.].
A second feature story by Ron Keith titled [Dead and AIDS / Grieving and bereavement are natural facts of life aggravated by AIDS] appears on pages from 17 to 19.
Several shorter articles appear under the [BLK Community News] section. Section [BLK Veil] on page 25 lists three obituaries: Linda S. Jackson, Dudley Elix Jones, and Huey P. Newton.
Gossip column [Read My Lips} appears on page 27. [BLK LIST], a listing of gay and lesbian organizations, bars, and baths, runs on pages 28 and 29. Entities are assigned one to four stars based on how black they are, with one star meaning “Somewhat black” and four stars “All black.” [BLK MARKET], the classified and personals section, runs pages 31 to 34.
