Description:
A Grand Army of the Republic medal owned by Marquis Peterson. The medal has a suspension brooch in the shape of an eagle with spread wings above crossed canons. It is attached to a red ribbon. A metal suspender attaches the medal to the ribbon. The medal is in the shape of a five-pointed star. The front of the medal Has the seal of the Grand Army of the Republic at center. The seal shows a sailor and soldier next to American flags. They are shaking hands in front of a standing woman. A kneeling woman and a standing child with raised arms are between the sailor and soldier. Embossed lettering circles the seal around the edge and reads “GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC” at top and “1861 VETERAN 1866” at the bottom. Around the seal on each point of the star additional emblems are embossed. They are crossed sabers, crossed rifles, crossed cannons, a bugle and an anchor. The back of the medal has a shield at center. This is surrounded by 8 fraternal symbols forming a circle. This circle is surrounded by another circle of 16 fraternal symbols. This is encircled by 34 five-pointed stars. The five-star points on the back of the medal also have things embossed on them. The top two connecting to the suspender ae olive branches. The tow on the side are wreaths and the point on the bottom is of a banner.
