Devin Allen’s images went viral on social media in 2015, when he posted portraits of protests as demonstrations happened on the ground. Online communities quickly shared his images worldwide, and within weeks, Time magazine featured one of Allen’s photographs on its cover. In this image, the photographer documents a demonstrator demanding to be heard, as she reaches for a microphone. The image captures the emotional intensity that Allen often brings to his photography. Like well-crafted Greek tragedies with the epic scale of classic theater and film, Allen’s protagonists are monumental in their humanity. He made history as a prodigy who conquered social media as a democratizing medium. Rather than allow publishers to shape and interpret history, Allen proved that the power of history belongs to the community.
