Description:
A silver gelatin print depicting a black-and-white image of participants standing and seated on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, during the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. Most of the men in the image are standing behind three (3) seated rows of men and women. They are mostly wearing suits with collared shirts, jackets and ties. Four (4) women, wearing black dresses, are seated in the front two (2) rows. One (1) woman, depicted in the center of the image, is standing in front of the seated rows. She is looking towards the left of the image, holding papers in front of her with both hands. She is wearing a black dress, a pearl necklace, and a white pinback button on her proper right shoulder. On the right side of the image is a man’s face and shoulder in profile, in the immediate foreground.
On the verso of the image are handwritten inscriptions that provide publication information, image date, event information, location, image number, the name of the printer, and the signature of the donor. There are also three (3) stamp marks in black ink in the bottom right corner of the verso.
