Description:
A silver gelatin print depicting a black-and-white image of a man taken on the day of the March on Washington, August 28, 1963. The man, depicted center in profile, is walking in front of the Petersen House. He is wearing a white, short-sleeved, collared shirt and medium toned pants. He is holding his proper right thumb to his chin and has a striped, paper bag in his proper left hand. Behind the man is the brick front entryway to the Peterson House. Above his head is a sign attached to the black, cast iron railing leading up the stairs to the front door of the house. The sign reads [HOUSE WHERE LINCOLN DIED] at the top, followed by admission prices, hours, and [U.S. DEPT. OF THE INTERIOR] on the bottom left and [NATIONAL PARK SERVICE] on the bottom right edge of the sign.
On the verso of the image are handwritten inscriptions that provide publication information, image date, event information, location, image number, the name of the printer, and the signature of the donor. There is also the photographer’s label as well as a stamp mark in black ink in the bottom right corner of the verso.
