Description:
A sixty-one page booklet with a tan, paper cover with black ink. At the top center of the recto, text reads: [Constitution / and Laws / OF THE / KNIGHTS OF THE / KU KLUX KLAN/ INCORPORATED]. At the bottom center of the recto, text reads: [IMPERIAL PALACE-INVISIBLE EMPIRE / KNIGHTS of the KU KLUX KLAN / ATLANTA, GEORGIA]. In the center recto, is an image of two hooded klansmen on rearing horses. Between the two horsemen is the phrase [“Non Silba Sed Anthar”]. At the beginning of the book is a [L’ENVOI], a verse It is followed by a [DECLARATION], [THE IMPERIAL PROCLAMATION], and the [KU KLUX KREED]. The constitution establishes their order, their governing body, their legislative body, the organization of the order at the various levels of governance from the Imperial Palace to each individual klan. It also describes the functions and duties of each officer within the order, establishes rules for membership, clothing regulations, the order’s calendar and anniversary, offenses and penalties.
Statement:
Objects depicting symbols of hate or related to organized hate groups may be offensive and disturbing, but the NMAAHC aims to include them in the Collection to present and preserve the historical context in which they were created and used. Objects of this type provide an important historical record from which to study and evaluate history and culture.
