A one-page handwritten letter to Robert Bell from the Freedmen's bureau regarding a dispute with a woman identified as "Eliza." On recto, on the top right side of the letter in decorative print is: [Headquarters Office Assistant Superintendent, / BUREAU OF REGUEES FREEDMAN AND A. L. / Salisbury, N. C., Nov 15 1865.]. The letter reads: [Mr. Robert Bell / You will please / settle justly with the colored girl / Eliza or appear on Monday the 20 / show cause why you have not / done so / [illegible]. The letter is signed by the agent at bottom center. Handwritten in graphite on verso are various arithmetic calculations.
