Caption:
This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860.
Description:
This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by Edward Rouzee to the Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1807. The itemized property is listed as "22 negroes 12 horses and 1 Coachee," seven hundred and forty-eight (748) acres of land, nineteen (19) levies at ninety-three (93) cents each. Following this are taxes paid to West End, Essex County, Carolina County and the Sheriff. The document notes that forty (40) dollars was paid in cash on September 30, 1808. The balance of seventeen (17) dollars and forty-eight cents was paid October 27, 1808. The document is signed in the bottom right by Robert Hill. On the reverse is written "Robert Hill Acct. + Rec'd for taxes 1808, 27, Oct." Both sides are written in black ink.
