This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860.
Description:
This handwritten, single page document is a tax account and payment receipt written up by Robert Hill for the estate of John Rouzee for the year 1816. This list of property taxed includes "26 neg. 10 Ho. + 4 wheel car." as well as four hundred and ninty-seven (497) acres of land and twenty (20) levies at one (1) dollar and fifty (50) cents each. The total amount of taxes due was seventy-four (74) dollars and five (5) cents. At the bottom is a note dated October 19, 1816 that payment was received in full from Edward Rouzee. It is signed in the bottom right by Robert Hill. On the reverse is written "Robt. Hill's acct." with notes about the amount and date received.
