Summary:
This foam core sign illustrates one team of businesses participating in developing early concepts for a space station to be built and flown by the United States. In the 1980s, different groups of companies planned and bid on the contracts to construct their concepts. Rockwell International Corp. led a team bidding for the framework, superstructure and computer contract. The team included Grumman Aerospace, Harris Corp., Intermetrics Inc., Unisys Corp., United Technologies, and TRW. Sperry is also named on the sign.
This sign was owned by F. Peter Simmons, an aerospace engineer who studied at the George Washington University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Simmons worked as Director of Space Astronomy at Grumman Aerospace Corporation.
Simmons gave the sign to the Museum when he donated his papers to the Museum's Archives in 2005.
