Pilot's knee board for North American X-15 used by Scott Crossfield; gray plastic board with black and white cotton twill strap with snap; chrome steel "D" brackets on strap for adjustments; pencil sharpener upper right corner; ten ring binder in center; seven type and hand written instruction pages for the X-15 no. 2 powered flight number 12; two strips of black foam padding on underside of board; clear plastic paper clip on top and bottom center of board; white adhesive tape with hand written name "PROPERTY OF Scott Crossfield"
Summary:
This pilot's knee board was used by Scott Crossfield during the twelfth flight of the North American X-15 no. 2 on December 6, 1960. This was the last flight of an X-15 by Crossfield and during this flight he achieved a speed of Mach 2.85 and an altitude of 53,374 feet. The purpose of this flight was to demonstrate that is was possible to restart the X-15's XLR99 engine in flight.
