United States Army Air Service (USAAS) 139th Aero Squadron aircraft fabric insignia; Roman god Mercury depicted in white paint on olive-green background fabric.
Summary:
Lt. Russell Maughan removed this 139th Aero Squadron "Mercury" insignia from the side of the Spad 13 he flew during World War I. Maughan achieved four aerial victories in this aircraft and saved this insignia as a souvenir before the aircraft was destroyed after the Armistice at Colemey-Les Belles, France.
