In 1800s in America a tremendous expansion in horticulture was taking place alongside a revolution in printing technology, which resulted in a substantial increase in the number and substance of floral and horticultural books and magazines being published. By 1850, there had already been double the botanical publications of the entire previous century. In 1876, the entire horticultural community of nurserymen, florists, and seedsmen organized under a trade group, the AANF&S (American Association of Nurserymen, Florists, & Seedsmen, which encouraged the development of the trade press. Important publications were the almanacs published by seed companies that included a calendar of operations for the garden and greenhouse as well as descriptions of the mode of cultivating each type of seed.
