American Seed Trade Association medal. The front of the medal features a relief featuring a pregnant woman casting seeds from a bag slung over her shoulder. In lower relief in the background is an outline of North America. The words “American Seed Trade Association, 1883-1983” surround the image. The back of the medal reads “The First Century of Service to the Seed Industry with a large applied seed bag printed with “asta first-the-seed 100th Convention San Francisco.” The medal has a blue leather three-fold, case with brass snap. The snap reads “FIOCCHI ITALY.” On the inside of case stamped in gold it reads “S.A.R.I. PICCHIANI F. BARI ACCHI FIRENZE.”

Florists, seedsmen, and horticulturalists exhibited the very latest and most unusual developments in horticulture, floriculture, and garden design at flower shows, county and state fairs, and World’s Fairs throughout the nineteenth century. Medals, crafted in gold, silver, and bronze, were awarded to outstanding entries in long lists of special categories. Winners often used these awards in advertisements for their businesses or products with the aim of garnering publicity and increasing sales.
