Around edge of medallion in block letters "Universal Exposition Saint Louis United States of America MCMIV" two women in high relief- left woman taller, clothed in classical drapery, roman helmet, holds cloth with etched stars and stripes. Right woman is smaller, 2 braids, holds drapery with etched bees over her legs and pelvis. Sun with rays in low relief in background of right. Below sun is lightly etched A WEINMAN FECT Back: Same medallion, triangles and fleur-de-lis design. In medallopm an eagle in detailed relief, wings spread , head in profile, holding branches in both feet standing on plaque reading "Silver Medal / Louisianna Purchase / Exposition" scrolls and shell at base of plaque 2 dolphins in profile curving along the base of medallion.

Florists, seedsmen, and horticulturalists exhibited the very latest and most unusual developments in horticulture, floriculture, and garden design at flower shows, county and state fairs, and World’s Fairs throughout the nineteenth century. Medals, crafted in gold, silver, and bronze, were awarded to outstanding entries in long lists of special categories. Winners often used these awards in advertisements for their businesses or products with the aim of garnering publicity and increasing sales.
