The artist depicts two frayed leaves of a banana tree, and the poem celebrates one of the plant's most admired qualities: the melodic sound of rain hitting its broad leaves. With its pleasing combination of color, shape, and sound, the banana plant was a popular addition to traditional Chinese scholars' gardens.
