Sidney Dillon Ripley (1913-2001) was an American ornithologist and served as the 8th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1964 to 1984. His wife, Mary Moncrieffe Livingston Ripley(1914-1996), was an American horticulturist and entomologist. The Dillons travel and temporarily resided in South Asia and Southeast Asia, where they conducted research in their respective scientific fields.
