A Japanese landscape of rolling hills and blossoming cherry trees suggests the mountainous scenery of Yoshino, a district near Nara famous for its spring scenery. Among Kano Tanyu's numerous paintings are many that reflect his interest in the traditional styles and subjects of Japanese painting (yamato-e). His signature on this painting includes his age of seventy-one years (seventy by Western custom), and his honorific title, hoin (seal of the [Buddhist] Law), which was conferred on him ten years earlier, in 1662.
