Abstract:
Field notes that are survey records on migratory birds specimens collected in Egypt for the Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey. From the finding aid (SIA RU000435): "The Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey (PMS), a survey of migratory birds, their ectoparasites and the viruses they carry, was conducted in the eastern Mediterranean from 1966 to 1971. The primary PMS operation site was in northern Egypt. Surveys were also conducted in Cyprus and Israel. The PMS involved scientists of the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval Medical Research Unit, and Yale University, and was funded by the Army Research Office, the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program, and the Smithsonian Research Foundation. George E. Watson, Chairman, Department of Vertebrate Zoology, and Curator, Division of Birds, National Museum of Natural History, was Principal Investigator". Surveys were also conducted in Uganda. A photocopy of a folder cover is inserted before the first form, showing the field notes' numbers "060 00001-00041" and the note "Checked against printout. Retraps noted." The records show the band number, name of species for each bird specimen, date, locality of capture and release, data on sex (as determined by dissection, plumage, soft parts or otherwise), age (as determined by skull, plumage, soft parts or otherwise), weight, molt (on head, body, tail or wings), details, source (bought, PMS, NAMRU, other), method of collection (netted, lime, shot or other), way of disposition (skin, skeleton, alcoholic, discarded, other), parasites, banding recoveries, and additional remarks. Cards, marked "Do not punch, do not allow", are inserted before record 060-00026 and before record 060-00032.
