Abstract:
Hitchcock documents his traveled to studying the grazing industry of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in 1924 with a brief report and collection of black and white photographs. Specimens collected included all kinds of flowering plants. The Gray Herbarium of Harvard University and New York Botanical Garden received were both funding sources for the trip, and received specimen sets matching what was collected for the National Herbarium. The field book includes an itinerary of the trip, details about travel, agriculture, horse feed, grazing industry, topography and climate of the countries. The majority of the notebook is composed of images, with detailed captions.|Subject matter of photographs includes images of topography and climate of the countries (plains, terraced hillsides, slopes) and images documenting fundamentals of daily life (home construction, fuel sources, work in town and in the field). Specific subject matter includes: grazing areas and structures of the Chuquibambilla Experiment Station, Peru; care of sheep herds; landscape of Ollantaitambo [Ollantaytambo], Peru; plains of southern Bolivia; cultivated fields in Ecuador; Hitchcock's caravan; partially and fully constructed houses of lower and upper class; commonly used local building materials and methods; common fuel sources like peat, roots, and yareta; ranches; and villages near Guayaquil, Ecuador.
